The More You Know
A heartfelt dawn breaks over Bendigo, as the community unites for ANZAC Day's Swan Service, honoring our heroes past and present. #LestWeForget

In the chilly early hours of ANZAC Day, the Bendigo community gathered in significant numbers at the Soldiers Memorial Institute, demonstrating a poignant blend of remembrance and unity. The day commenced with a solemn march from Bull Street to the memorial, where the dawn service saw an impressive turnout, stretching the crowd from the museum forecourt towards the nearby Alexandra Fountain. This year’s service highlighted the theme of ‘Peacekeepers, Peacemakers, and Peacebuilders’, with former peacekeeper Carl Chirgwin delivering a moving speech that resonated deeply with attendees.

Post-service activities included the traditional gunfire breakfast and morning services at various locations around Greater Bendigo, reflecting the city’s rich spirit of commemoration and community engagement. The Bendigo District RSL Sub-branch played a central role, ensuring veterans and their families felt appreciated and honored. The afternoon continued with a free roast lunch for veterans, providing a warm, communal space for reflection and camaraderie.

The Bendigo Military Museum also opened its doors for a special exhibition, “The Faces of Peace”, which explores the courageous stories of Australian Peacekeepers. This exhibition, available throughout the weekend, offers an insightful complement to the day’s reflective theme, making it a must-visit for both locals and visitors.
