The More You Know

The Saving Dragons book launch in Bendigo was a spectacular celebration! The event honored Russell Goldfield (Louey Yeung Man) Jack’s legacy, featuring cultural performances, lion dances, and a powerful reflection on history.

Bendigo’s rich Chinese-Australian history was brought to life at Saving Dragons: The Life and Times of Russell Goldfield (Louey Yeung Man) Jack book launch. Held at The Capital Theatre on February 22, the event was a stunning tribute to Russell Jack, co-founder of the Golden Dragon Museum and a key figure in preserving Chinese heritage in Bendigo.

The evening featured an electrifying lion dance performance by the Bendigo Chinese Association Lion Team, accompanied by a traditional Hoi Gong ceremony, which blessed three beautifully crafted new lion heads. The fusion of cultures was on full display, with a Scottish bagpiper adding a unique touch to the ceremony.

Award-winning journalist and author Dianne Dempsey spoke about her inspiration behind the book, detailing Jack’s lifelong mission to replace ignorance with knowledge and unite cultures through dragon parades and historical preservation. “Russell’s story is not just about one man—it’s about an entire community’s resilience,” she shared.

Attendees had the opportunity to meet the author, grab a signed copy of the book, and celebrate Bendigo’s vibrant past. If you missed out, you can still pick up Saving Dragons at the Golden Dragon Museum or online through Australian Scholarly Publishing.
