The More You Know
The 36th Alliance Française French Film Festival brought the world of contemporary French cinema right into the heart of Bendigo from April 11–13, 2025. Hosted at the ever-charming Star Cinema in Eaglehawk, this three-day cultural event offered a curated lineup of compelling stories, vibrant characters, and musical brilliance.
Opening night dazzled with Monsieur Aznavour, a touching biopic on the beloved French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour. “It was emotional, beautifully made, and you could feel the crowd connecting with his story,” one attendee shared.
Saturday kept audiences enthralled with a strong trio of films—The Divine Sarah Bernhardt, a costume drama; Juliette in Spring, a feel-good family journey; and the intense, thrilling How to Make a Killing. Each screening reflected different aspects of modern French filmmaking, from historical reverence to dark humor.
On Sunday, laughter and soulfulness reigned. Meet the Leroys delivered quirky charm, Bolero paid homage to Ravel’s enduring musical masterpiece, and My Brother’s Band closed the festival with a harmonious story of sibling love and reunion.
The intimate, boutique setting of Star Cinema allowed audiences to feel immersed and connected. “It’s like being in someone’s home, but with French subtitles and popcorn,” one guest chuckled. Events like these help strengthen community ties while offering a taste of the world’s finest cinematic gems.
