The athletics community in Bendigo celebrated a meaningful milestone as the La Trobe University Bendigo Athletics Complex was officially renamed to Lar Birpa Athletics Complex. The new name, which translates to “a place to run” in the language of the Dja Dja Wurrung people, pays tribute to the Traditional Owners of the land.
City of Greater Bendigo Director of Healthy Communities, Stacy Williams, shared that the renaming followed the City’s 2020 acquisition of the site and aligned with their Reconciliation Plan, Barpangu 2021-2025. “This name change reflects our strong commitment to supporting Aboriginal place naming,” said Williams. The renaming is part of a broader initiative to use Traditional Owner language in public spaces across the municipality.
After community consultation and review by Geographic Names Victoria, the name Lar Birpa was confirmed and gazetted on January 11, 2024. The official unveiling, scheduled for Monday, September 2nd, will feature new signage and a ceremonial presentation of artwork reflecting the rich cultural history of the region.
The athletics facility, located at 58 Retreat Road, Flora Hill, continues to serve as a top venue for school carnivals, competitions, and training, now under its new name that reflects a deep cultural heritage.
