The 2024 Australian Alpaca National Show, held from August 16 to 18 at the Prince of Wales Showgrounds in Bendigo, was nothing short of spectacular. This prestigious event, the crown jewel of Australia’s alpaca showing calendar, brought together over 300 Suri and Huacaya alpacas, along with 200 fleeces from the nation’s top breeders.
Judges Natasha Clark from the Australian Alpaca Association (AAA) and Barbara Hetherington from the British Alpaca Society (BAS) provided expert evaluations, with detailed oral critiques for champions, ensuring breeders received valuable insights into their breeding programs. The event was meticulously organized by convenors Jonathon Provis-Vincent and Maddy Bissels, who have been praised for creating a seamless and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
Exhibitors like StoryBook Alpacas and Fashionista Alpacas celebrated their successes, with standout performances in the show ring. The event also featured a vibrant craft display, showcasing the best in hand-spun yarns, weaving, knitting, and felting, with Cynthia Hall and Ann Weir dominating the awards in various categories.
Visitors enjoyed browsing the merchandise stalls, including Australian Alpaca Obsession, which offered a range of alpaca products from coats to feed bags. The show was not just about competition; it was a celebration of community, craftsmanship, and the enduring allure of alpacas in Australia.
